This much-loved 34-acre park, developed by Arthur Wakerley and others between the 1880s and 1930s, is a vital green space in the city and a hub for local families. One of its most iconic features is the timber-framed adventure playground, which has supported generations of children since it was first established in 1971 with funds raised by University of Leicester students.

Over the past 50 years, the playground has provided a safe, inclusive space for thousands of young people aged six to 14, offering regular activities throughout the year — including weekends and school holidays. With both indoor and outdoor areas, the site boasts an art room, games room, hall, kitchen, and a computer room — all helping to support creative, active, and social play.

Despite recent efforts by University staff to repaint and maintain the play structures, the equipment had fallen into disrepair and needed significant attention. In response, Oliveti and other local contractors stepped in to replace the deteriorated timber-framed structures, helping to restore the space to its former glory.

Gareth Smith, Director at Oliveti Group, said:
“Parks like Spinney Hill are the heartbeat of their communities. This playground has played a huge role in the lives of young people in Leicester for over five decades, and it’s vital we help protect and maintain these spaces. Social value projects like this show what we can achieve together — improving lives, encouraging outdoor play, and strengthening the ties between businesses, universities, and local residents.”

This project highlights the powerful role that social value-led partnerships can play in urban communities — particularly where access to safe, green, and engaging public spaces is so important. For children growing up in city environments, parks like this are not just places to play, but spaces to grow, learn, connect, and thrive.

The initiative is part of Oliveti’s wider social value programme, which includes collaborations with schools, colleges, and public bodies to deliver lasting, community-driven impact across the Midlands.
