From School to Skilled Joiner: Ben’s 17-Year Journey at Oliveti Group

When Ben first walked through the doors of Oliveti Group at just 14 years old, he was a school student on a one-day-a-week work experience placement. Seventeen years later, he’s a highly skilled bench joiner and a valued member of our in-house manufacturing team.

At the time, Ben wasn’t enjoying school. Traditional classroom learning didn’t suit his hands-on nature, and frustration was starting to show. His school even warned us that he might be “difficult.” But from his very first day on site, it was clear Ben was in the right environment.

“As soon as I got into the workshop, something clicked,” says Ben. “I could use my hands, work alongside experienced people, and actually see what I was achieving each day. It just made sense.”

What began as a simple work experience opportunity quickly developed into something more. Ben returned during school holidays, and by the time he turned 16, he had accepted a full-time apprenticeship with Oliveti. Originally interested in bricklaying, he soon discovered a real passion for joinery.

Supported by our team, Ben enrolled in a Level 2 Bench Joinery Apprenticeship at Leicester College, later progressing to Level 3. He trained under the guidance of some of our most experienced craftspeople—learning not just the techniques, but also the pride and precision that define quality joinery.

“The older joiners took me under their wing,” Ben recalls. “They showed me the ropes properly. It wasn’t just about getting the job done—it was about doing it well.”

Today, Ben plays a key role in delivering bespoke joinery solutions for our clients, including schools, civic buildings, and commercial projects. From custom cubicles and fitted furniture to one-off pieces, his work is a testament to the craft he’s developed over nearly two decades.

When asked what he enjoys most, Ben doesn’t hesitate:

“The bespoke stuff. Knowing I’ve made something unique that fits perfectly into a space—and will last—that’s what makes me proud.”

Ben’s story is also a shining example of what’s possible when young people are given the right environment and support to thrive.

“I didn’t have much confidence back then,” he says. “But Oliveti believed in me. They gave me the chance to learn, grow, and build a career.”

Looking ahead, Ben hopes to help train the next generation of apprentices—passing on the same guidance that helped shape his own career.

“I’d love to support the younger ones coming through. If I can help someone else find what they’re good at, like I did, that would mean a lot.”

At Oliveti Group, we’re proud of Ben’s journey—and of our continued commitment to creating meaningful career pathways for young people in construction. His story is proof that with the right opportunity and the right mindset, anything is possible.
